Doggy Paddle, Caramel-Style!

A Recount by Sarah!

One of the most amusing events I’ve had with my dogs would have to be the time that Caramel attempted to swim!

First off, before I begin my story, I’d better fill you in on some background info. I have two dogs, Taffy and Caramel. Taffy is three and a half, while Caramel has just celebrated her first birthday.

This happened last summer, when my family and I were going camping.  We went to a couple of campsites with a place for dogs to swim, so we thought we’d introduce Caramel to swimming! Taffy loves to swim, so we figured that Caramel would pick up the talent just as quickly as she had. However, we were certainly wrong! Once we persuaded Caramel to go into the deep section, chaos broke loose.

Okay, imagine this. Taffy, graceful as she is, gently kicked her four legs to swim around horizontally in the water. Caramel, on the other hand, swam by pounding the water with her front paws, barely using her back legs at all. She literally swam vertically, her upper body out of the water. In effect, we were all splashed thoroughly with water, as Caramel attempted to drink the airborne water droplets. It was a very comical sight, and the other dog owners were starting to stare.

Caramel, of course, quickly tired of this method, and strategically climbed onto her sister’s back and shoulders to take a rest. Taffy continued to swim, despite the heavy load, but when Caramel decided to climb on Taffy’s head, we felt it was time to intervene so that no tragic drowning took place.

Anyway, I thought that this was a very amusing experience and hoped it would bring a smile to somebody’s face! J

Caramel's not so sure she wants to try the deep end.

Struggling through the water, Caramel gets an idea!

"Whee! Taffy'll give me a ride!"

Don't drown her, Caramel!

Swimming is not one of Caramel's pastimes, and Taffy's probably not thrilled with this new development.

Soggy doggies!

Swimming is exhausting. Tired puppy!
